The duties and obligations of an individual boardmember may be enumerated as follows:

To familiarize himself/herself with the State School Laws, regulations of the State Department of Education, Harrison County School Board policies, rules, and regulations.
To have a general knowledge of educational philosophy, aims and objectives of the system.

To work harmoniously with other board members without trying either to dominate the board or neglect his/her share of the work.

To vote and act in the board meetings impartially for the good of the district.

To accept the will of the majority vote in all cases and give wholehearted support to the resulting policy.

To represent the board and the Harrison County School System to the public in such a way as to promote both interest and support.

To refer complaints to the proper school authorities and to abstain from individual counsel and action.
To abstain from voting or taking any action on any matter in which he/she could be reasonably accused of having a personal or vested interest.

LOCAL RESPONSIBILITY OF THE BOARD
The board has general control and management of the public schools in the district. Among the more important duties of the board are the following:
- Establish and/or maintain schools.
- Adopt courses of study.
- Provide necessary services to pupils.
- Manage all school funds and property.
- Make appropriate rules and regulations through written published policy.
- Appoint and/or evaluate the superintendent of schools.
- Adopt a school budget (refer to Appendix B regarding the state School Aid Formula).
- Take necessary action to secure the levying of needed taxes.
- Assess student progress.
- Adopt a plan to address school safety and discipline.
