Preparing for a better future.....

Quality work-based learning experiences can be a key part of transition planning for students with disabilities. Through work-based learning, students have the opportunity to learn about various career areas and try different work styles. They have the opportunity to find out what type of work they enjoy and how they learn best in a workplace setting.

Research has documented the importance of work-based learning experiences. Studies show that students who participate in work exploration programs experience an increase in the completionof academics, improved attendance and higher graduation rates.(Colley & Jamison, 1998)

In addition, youth who participate in career awareness programs are more likely to maintain employment or continue with post-secondary education or training.

In 1992, Harrison County Schools began a work exploration program to help prepare students successfully transition from school to the world of work. Throughout the past 20 years, many students have had the opportunity  to discover work preferences, develop employability skills, and prepare for post-secondary living.

HCS now offers a comprehensive work-based learning program for special needs students in grades 10 through 12. Students begin exploration and discovery through a battery of assessments and counseling and build on their strengths throughout their junior and senior years of high school.
