Dr. Geraldine Newlon
Business Education

Dr. Newlon and her son Adrian
After Dr. Newlon (at that time Miss Newlon) graduated with her teaching degree, she was a substitute teacher in Taylor County where she lived with her family, and a temporary office worker for Kelly Temporary Services. At Kelly Services she worked in many business office and computer positions for companies in north central West Virginia, such as Ruby Memorial Hospital, Petroleum Development Corporation, Westinghouse, and many other businesses including several banks.
After a year of temporary employment, Dr. Newlon began her teaching career at Computer Tech in Fairmont, WV, a post-secondary school for adults where she taught business, computer applications, and computer programming languages. She taught both day and evening programs.
After leaving Computer Tech three years later, she applied for a teaching position at Human Resource Development Foundation (HRDF), Inc. a private, non-profit training center in downtown Morgantown. The position had been vacated by Dr. Newlon's former college classmate, Doris Ann Higginbotham. Dr. Newlon was hired and began teaching business and computer technology classes to adults who were in need of new job skills due to the many factory closings that occurred as many corporations were sending their manufacturing jobs overseas to foreign countries in an effort to increase profits by hiring cheap labor.
During the time Dr. Newlon taught at HRDF, Inc., she also taught part-time in the evenings for several years at Fairmont State University in the Business and Office Technology department, as well as part-time in the evenings at United Technical Center.
In 1999, the funding for the training programs at HRDF was dwindling, so Dr. Newlon applied for a full-time teaching position with the Harrison County Board of Education. Shortly, she was hired as a business teacher at Liberty High School under the guidance of Mrs. Cathy Hickman, the business department chair.
Dr. Newlon has remained at Liberty High School in Room 318 since 1999, and during that time has continued to build on her own education at night and on the weekends. Finally, after twelve years in the doctoral program at WVU, she graduated in May, 2009.
