GEAR UP

GEAR-UP INFORMATION

 

GEAR-UP is a program for 8th & 9th grade students.  GEAR-UP is a grant partnership with Fairmont State that is promoting Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs.  The Fairmont State GEAR-UP Partnership Grant will serve over 6,600 students & families in 14 West Virginia counties & schools.

CURRENT & UPCOMING ACTIVITIES

 

PARENT WORKSHOP – 1/22/086-8 pm

Get the New Year started on a HEALThY NOTE!  Come to the parent workshop on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008.  Dr. Nelson has invited speakers to talk about healthy lifestyles.  Healthy refreshments will be served.

 

TUTORING

We offer tutoring for students every morning from 7-7:30 in the library and after school on Wednesday from 3-5 in the library.  Please encourage students to take advantage of this opportunity.  

 

GEAR-UP POSTER/T-SHIRT CONTEST

GEAR-UP will sponsor a poster contest for freshmen.  Mrs. Crim has agreed to coordinate this activity.  The 1st place winning design will be put on a T-shirt. Students will compete for 1st place - $25, 2nd place - $20, & 3rd place - $15.

 

MENTORING MEETING –1/30/08– 3-4:30 PM

Freshmen who return their permission forms will have the opportunity to participate in a mentoring program sponsored by Fresh Start Mentoring Services.  Tony Richardson will bring WVU students to talk to Liberty students about preparing for college & college life in general.  We will try to schedule these meetings once a month.  We will meet in the cafeteria under the supervision of Liberty staff.  In the spring we will have a school wide assembly with WVU athletes.  Refreshments will be served.

 

COMPUTER SCHOLARSHIP

Information about this scholarship was given to students in late November.  Get those applications completed!!!

 

STEVE GRANT ASSEMBLY - 2/21/08 – 8:30 am

In February, we will have a motivational assembly presented by Steve Grant.  I have talked to other teachers who have seen this presentation & they say it is really good.  We will include the whole student body.

PAST ACTIVITIES

 

MENTORING MEETING – 12/5/073-5 PM

Tony Richardson brought WVU students to talk to Liberty students about preparing for college & college life in general.  We had 12 students who attended.  Refreshments were served.

 

MARTIN LUTHER KING ESSAY CONTEST

Students in 9th grade had the opportunity to participate in an essay contest.  The first place winner was Mercedez Beavers for a $25 prize, the 2nd place winner was Natasha Searcy for a $20 prize, & the 3rd place winner was Michelle Lindsey for a $15 prize. These top 3 winners at Liberty will then compete at Fairmont State for 1st prize - $500, 2nd prize - $300, & 3rd prize - $200.

 

PARENT WORKSHOP – 12/18/076-8 P.M.

On Tuesday, 12/18/07, we had a parent workshop in the library.  Mrs. Amy Hinkle did a free make-over on several girls with her Mary Kay Products.  We also had AVON products from Mrs. Donna Hayes.

 

PARENT WORKSHOP – 11/13/076-8 pm

On Tuesday, 11/13/07, we had a parent workshop on college preparation with a speaker from WVU Ag. Science Department. 

 

PARENT WORKSHOP – 10/18/07

Paula Nelson organized a parent workshop to help parents prepare for sending their students to college.  She discussed scholarships, the Promise, FAFSA & useful internet sites.  She also discussed computer technology.  Refreshments were served.  Two $25 Walmart Gift Certificates were given away.  We had about 12 parents attend.

 

TONY RICHARDSON ASSEMBLEY – 10/9/07

Tony Richardson presented a motivational assembly for our freshmen on 10/9/07.  Tony runs FRESH START MENTORING SERVICES.  He plans to bring WVU students to Liberty to talk to our freshmen about college.

 

AEROSPACE EXPO FIELD TRIP – 10/3/07

Approximately 100 freshmen went to the Aerospace Expo at the Clarksburg Parking Garage.  The purpose of this activity was to encourage students to consider this field as a career choice.  In 5 years about 27% of all workers in this field will be eligible for retirement.
