GEAR UP INFORMATION

FOR LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL 

GEAR UP is a program for 9th & 10th grade students & their families.  GEAR UP is a grant partnership with Fairmont State that is promoting Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs.  The Fairmont State GEAR UP Partnership Grant will serve 6,600 students & families in 14 WV counties & schools.

 UPCOMING EVENTS

TUTORING SESSIONS:  All tutoring sessions will be held in the library.  Tutoring sessions will be every morning from 7 – 7:30 & Thursday after school from 3 – 5.  Students who stay after school may ride the activity bus or be picked up by parents.  See Mrs. Capozzi in room 112 or Mr. Book in room 301 if you have any questions.  Parents we need permission forms for tutoring.  Students may get forms from tutors, Mrs. Capozzi or Mr. Book.

 

Past Events

April 22, 2009 – Mentoring session.  20 students attended the mentoring session with Tony Richardson today from 10:55 – 11:55.  Tony talked about past events & preparing for college.  Salem IGA provided pizza & pepperoni rolls.

March 19, 2009 – Parent Meeting was held with Matt DeLucca.  There were 11 parents with lots of good questions.

March 9, 2009 – Pricketts Fort Program.  The staff from Pricketts Fort came to Liberty High School to teach students in the gym classes traditional dance.  The teachers reported that students realy enjoyed this program.

February 26, 2009 – Shakespeare Play at Fairmont State University. Students saw a version of Hamlet.

February 23, 2009 – WVU Tour.  Students traveled to West Virginia University to tour the campus & the coliseum.  Students met the basketball players, got their autographs & toured the basketball facility.  We stopped at McDonald’s on the way home.

February 21, 2009 – Go Green Conference.  Students traveled to West Virginia Wesleyan College to attend this conference & tour the campus.  Students got good ideas about going GREEN.

February 19, 2009 – Parent Meeting with Officer White gave parents & students a reality check on DUI.  Officer White brought the goggles & let students & parents see what it would be like walking under the influence.  Salem IGA provided great refreshments.

February 16, 2009 – Sylvester Myers & his wife Janice came to Liberty High School to speak to the English & History Classes about his life growing up in southern WV as a coal miner’s son.  Then he talked about his worldly experiences. 

February 12, 2009 – The 50 9th graders & the 50 10th graders with the highest GPA were able to purchase play tickets for “Suessical” for a reduced rate of $2. 

February 11, 2009– Mentoring session with Tony Richardson & WVU students was held on Wednesday, 2/11/09, from 11- 12 in room 112.   32 students attended & had a great time talking to WVU students & eating lunch provided by the Salem IGA.

January 26, 2009 – Parent Meeting – Help was given to parents & students who are filling out the Gear Up Computer Scholarship Application. 

December 16, 2008 – Spinning Bees Program.   Gary Auerbach introduced students to his 1995 World Freestyle Champion Frisbee techniques during gym classes.   Gary also demonstrated his techniques in the evening from 6:30 – 7:30.  He entertained everyone in the cafeteria and in the gym between the JV & Varsity basketball games.  Several students won free Frisbee equipment.

 December 10, 2008 – 25 students attended a mentoring session with Tony Richardson & 4 WVU students.  The session was held in Mrs. Capozzi’s room during lunch hour.  Students were served pizza & got to learn first hand about college life.

November 18, 2008 – Prickett’s Fort Traditional Dance Program.  During PE classes (all day) an instructor from Prickett’s Fort taught traditional dance to students.  The teachers reported that students rolled their eyes for the first 5 minutes & then they couldn’t believe how much the students participated.  Students told me what a great time they had.  This was a great way to learn about our heritage.

The purpose of this program is:

·       To promote science careers & introduce new career opportunities,

·       To encourage students to take classes that will prepare them for various fields,

·       To make students aware of science programs in state colleges, universities, & technical schools,

·       To let students know exactly what kind of work is involved in this field. 

We had a great day listening to these speakers.  The students were well behaved & all speakers arrived on time without getting lost.

November 13, 2008 – Mentoring session with Tony Richardson & WVU students was held in the cafeteria from 3 – 4:30.  Refreshments were served to 16 Liberty High School students & 4 WVU students.  WVU students discussed campus life, scholarships, & study habits.

November 6, 2008 – 50 students visited Fairmont State University on 11/6/08.  In the morning students toured the dorms.  Lunch was great – all you could eat.  After lunch students toured the campus & attended sessions presented by FSU students including one of our own – Hailey Holtz.

October 23, 2008 – Parent Meeting 5:00 -7:00.  Approximately 35 people attended this very informative meeting with John Ebert & his father discussing their business adventure.  John is the owner of several local McDonald’s.  His story is very interesting & he did some mock interviews.  Everyone enjoyed the McDonald’s meal that was served. 

October 9, 2008 – There was a mentoring meeting with Tony Richardson, WVU students and 24 Liberty students on Thursday from 3:00 to 4:30. Pizza, chips, & coke were enjoyed by those attending.  Thank you Salem IGA!  You do a great job.  All students must have a mentoring permission form on file to attend.  See Mrs. Capozzi (room 112) for a form.

September 26, 2008 - GEAR UP Posters due to Mrs. Capozzi (room 112) or to Mrs. Crim ( room 317).  The first place design will be placed on the T shirt & will receive a check for $50.  The second place winner will receive a check for $25 and third place $15.  Please encourage your student to participate.

September 19, 2008 - Tony Richardson Assembly at 12:00 pm for 9th & 10th grade students in the theater.  Tony brought WVU player Cam Thorman to discuss consequences of making the wrong choices vs making the right choices.  He also discussed college life as a basketball player.

 September 16, 2008 - Steve Grant Assembly - 9:30 am for Liberty students & families.  He had an outstanding motivational message.  Steve said that we are not born winners or losers, but are born choosers.  So we must make the right choices.  He stayed after the assembly to sign autographs.

August 29, 2008 – Agendas for freshmen & sophomores were passed out in homeroom. 

August 25, 2008 -   Freshmen Orientation - 6 pm 

August 25, 2008 - 1st GEAR UP parent meeting was on 8/25/08 at 7 pm in the cafeteria.  We had 9 teachers come to our meeting to talk to parents about upcoming activities in their departments.  Also, a counselor came to talk to parents about the Promise Scholarship & ACT.  We had great food from the Salem IGA & gave away valuable prizes, such as 3 season passes to Liberty High School Football games.
