INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Liberty High School I.M.C. It is a place to discover new ideas and to become familiar with a wide range of educational and recreational materials.
It is a facility meant to be used by student and teacher alike.
The I.M.C. houses books, periodicals (magazines), pamphlets, newspaper and audio-visual software.
The I.M.C. is meant to be used freely by everyone. Its regulations are not meant to be restrictive, but rather to allow maximum and fair use of all materials and facilities by faculty and students.
Enthusiasm and cooperation on everyone's part will make this the most functional and well-used I.M.C. in Harrison County.
Library
ATLAS STAND - It is located near the cafeteria exit and contains books with maps.
BIOGRAPHIES, ELECTRONIC – U-X-L BIOGRAPHIES – This CD available on Computer #14 offers access to more than 1,500 biographies of historical and contemporary figures. Included are people from all walks of life and various ethnic groups. The entries range from 1,000 to 3,000 words in length and cover the early years, formative experiences and careers of the biographees.
BOOK RETURN SLOT - It is located at the left side of the Circulation Desk. All returned materials should be placed there to prevent loss or misappropriation.
CARD CATALOG, ONLINE – The online card catalog (OPAC - Online Public Access Catalog) is available on the desktop on all computers. Searches are by title, author, subject, series, and call number. Interesting titles may be saved in the “Bookbag” and printed to keep for reference!
CARD CATALOG - Cards are filed alphabetically by subject, author, and title. "How to Use the LHS Card Catalog" information is available on top of the card catalog.
COURTESY - Students are expected to be couth at all times.
CIRCULATION DESK - Located in the center of the library for checking out library materials. The BOOK RETURN SLOT is located on the left side of the Circulation Desk.
CIRCULATION POLICY - (1) Locate your student card in the "Student Library Cards" (located on the Circulation Desk) by last name. (2) Sign the book card legibly with your first and last name, student number (located on the upper right of your student library card) and homeroom teacher's last name. (3) Have materials stamped at the Circulation Desk with the date due. (4) If the book has a bar code it will be entered into Circulation Plus. (5) There is no limit to the number of books a student may have from the regular collection. (6) If you check out a book for another student, you are responsible. (7) Any damaged or lost bar codes are $3.00 each.
DICTIONARY STANDS – One is located beside the Circulation Desk , and one is located near the Statue of Liberty by the windows. The dictionary stands contain current abridged and unabridged dictionaries for use in the library.
ENCYCLOPEDIAS - Encyclopedias available are: ACADEMIC AMERICAN ENCYCLOPEDIA; COLLIER'S ENCYCLOPEDIA; COMPTON'S ENCYCLOPEDIA; ENCYCLOPEDIA AMERICANA; ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA; THE NEW BOOK OF KNOWLEDGE;and WORLD BOOK. Encyclopedias are not to be taken from the I.M.C. and are not available for check out. Some classrooms are provided with encyclopedias for student use and may be checked out overnight by the teacher.
ENCYCLOPEDIAS, ELECTRONIC - The following are available: COMPTON'S INTERACTIVE ENCYCLOPEDIA, ENCARTA, ENCYCLOPEDIA AMERICANA, GROLIER MULTIMEDIA ENCYCLOPEDIA, and THE WORLD BOOK INFORMATION FINDER. See the librarian for access.
FICTION - Books that contain FALSE (made-up) information. They are shelved by author’s last name.
FINES - (1) A fine of ten cents ($0.10) per school day will be charged for overdue books. (2) Weekends are not included. (3) The fine stops when the book is returned. (4) Twenty-five cents ($0.25) per school day will be charged for overdue overnight books and overdue vertical file materials. (5) If a student is ill no fine is charged if student's name is on the absence list.
FIRE DRILL - In case of a fire drill while students are in the I.M.C. proceed out the front door of the building and into the circular driveway in the grassy area.
FOODS AND DRINKS - - Students are not allowed to have food, drinks or candy in the I.M.C. Use the cafeteria area.
HOURS - 7:50 A.M. to 3 P.M. Everyone is encouraged to browse, enjoy and become informed in the I.M.C.
INDIVIDUAL STUDENT USE OF THE I.M.C. - Any student who needs to do reference work (encyclopedias, magazines, etc.) must have a pass with name, date, time and teacher's signature to present to the librarian. This should be kept to a minimum. Teachers schedule classes in the I.M.C. when research is necessary.
INFOTRAC is a CD-ROM periodical program available in the library that accesses thousands of articles in hundred of magazines. Internet access to INFOTRAC for Liberty students is: www.searchbank.com/searchbank/harrisoncbedu. The password is mabjaar.
LOAN PRIVILEGES - (1) Books from the regular collection may be charged out for a period of two weeks. (2) Returning a book on the date the book is due is the responsibility of the borrower. (3) The borrower is responsible for any book or materials signed out. (4) All injuries to books beyond reasonable wear or loss of books is costly.
LOCATION - The I.M.C. is located on the first floor to the right of the front door. It faces the senior patio and is attractive and interesting.
LOST BOOKS AND MATERIALS - Report the loss of a library book immediately. If materials are lost, the full price must be paid. Refunds are made (less the fine) if the material is found.
NATIONAL LIBRARY SYMBOL - The symbol features a white figure shaped like a "L"--for library--holding a book on a vivid blue background. The clear, simple design suggests the active use of information by library patrons. It can be instantly understood without supporting text and is similar to the graphic style of international symbols already in widespread use. Wherever you see this symbol, you will know there is a library nearby.
NEWSPAPERS - The current issues of USA TODAY, THE SHINNSTON NEWS, THE CLARKSBURG EXPONENT are available from Mrs. Hayes. Newspapers do not circulate from the I.M.C. Back files of newspapers are kept for varying periods of time. A school scrapbook is compiled using newspaper articles concerning Liberty students and activities.
ORIENTATION - Library skills are taught by the librarian as needed.
OVERDUE MATERIALS - (1) Overdue library notices will be sent to the homeroom. (2) Students will only be sent one notice for each overdue book. (3) Students will not be allowed to check out additional materials until library fines are paid. (4) Report cards will be held in homeroom for overdue fines and books unless the student has an "F". Report cards will be given to students with an "F" so parents may monitor studies.
PAPERBACK RACK - It is located in the center of the I.M.C. and contains books of interest to all readers. It is a favorite book resource, and paperback books may be checked out for two weeks.
PERIODICALS - Among the library's most useful holdings are periodicals, popularly referred to as magazines. Frequently a periodical serves as the best--sometimes only--source for recent material on a give topic. The library has ten years of back files of periodicals indexed in the ABRIDGED READERS' GUIDE. Periodicals do not circulate from the I.M.C. Duplicate copies of periodicals are almost impossible to purchase. Library users may, however, make photocopies of desired articles for ($0.10) per page. Ask Mrs. Hayes to fax the other high schools in the county for a copy of a periodical article if it is not available in our library.
Current periodicals are shelved on the sloping shelves in the I.M.C. with some popular magazines at the Circulation Desk.
PHOTOCOPY SERVICE - The I.M.C. has photocopy service available for ten cents ($0.10) per page.
REFERENCE BOOKS - Reference books are to be used in the I.M.C. only and are not available for checkout. Reference books contain basic information for research papers and other in-depth studies. The call number has a R or REF above it.
RENEWING PROCEDURE - A book may be renewed if no other student has it reserved. The book must be brought to the library for renewal. The borrower must sign the book card each time the book is checked out.
RESERVE SLIPS - If a book that a student requests is in circulation, it may be reserved by completing a reserve slip. The student will be notified in homeroom when the book is available.
SUPPLY BOOTH - Located in front of Conference Room #1. For student and faculty use.
VERTICAL FILE – The vertical file is a folder containing newspaper and magazine articles and pamphlet materials. The Vertical File Index is at the card catalog in the brown drawers and also on the desktop on the computers. Ask for Vertical Files at the Circulation Desk after completing a Vertical File call slip. Vertical Files may be checked out for 2 days. Overdue vertical files are $0.25 per school day.
