IT’S A 58 DAY!

 

The week of Nov 17 thru Nov 21 is American Education Week and Geography Awareness Week!!

 

Today November 20 is the Great American Smoke out.

4200 West Virginians will die this year from tobacco related illnesses.  What are you going to do about it?

1. GEAR-UP TUTORING HAS BEGUN:  After school M-T-W-TH in Mrs. Matheny’s room from 3-5.  Before school T and TH in Mrs. Payton’s room from 7 – 7:45AM .Starting in October those who stay will have their names entered in a drawing to win a $25 Wal-Mart Card.  We will have a drawing each month.

2.  The TOC lab will be open during Lunch I and II starting Monday, October 13 for any 9th or 10th grader to come down for career cruising registration and any tutoring help sponsored thru Gear Up.  Also, teachers planning to use the lab 3rd or 7th during lunches, etc. should plan accordingly – the lab will be reserved thru November 21 during these times.

3.  RECYCLING:  We have been instructed by the county office to recycle paper.  Please either start or continue recycling as we have in the past.

4.  Gear-Up is thinking about offering an ACT Prep class starting second semester.  Any 11th grader interested in taking it should sign up with Mrs. Boyles.  There will be a cost to 11th grade students.  Also any 10th graders interested in taking the class can sign up as well and Gear Up can cover some of the costs to take the class – we need to have 25 to 30 students to take the class.

5.  SENIORS:  Yearbook needs your senior picture for the 2009 book.  (Wallet size-in color or not) as long as it is clear it is useable.  IF we can’t print it we will tell you.  Mrs. Tichenor will be collecting these for several months.  IF you have had them taken please turn in to room 113.

6.  All 9th & 10th grade AA’s are welcome to the visit the GO CENTER sponsored by Gear Up during AA.  The center is located in the corner of the AD office – our liaison, Mrs. Jett, will be available every M-W-F during AA to help students in the center.  Teacher can send students down with a note stating they are allowed to visit during AA after attendance has been taken.  Mrs. Jett will initial the note stating the students have been there.

7 .  Any student that is interested in “job shadowing” thru the Harrison County Rotary Club should see Mrs. Decker for details.  This applies to juniors and seniors.

8.  Gear Up Teachers:  ETR reports have been placed in your mailboxes.  You need to do a calendar for September, October, and November and the staff development report and the ETR report.  Please sign in blue ink and return to Mrs. Boyle’s mailbox ASAP.  Any questions please see her.

8.  Both RAZE GROUP Meetings will meet during AA in Room 209 today -

9.  Jr. Prom Committee Meeting during AA today.

10.  Any student who signed up for Math Field Day needs to see Mr. Lamb at lunch on Friday, November 21 to take the qualifying exam.

 

 

COUNSELOR NEWS:   1) Applications are available for scholarships for the summer 2009 Lion’s Club Youth Cultural Exchange Program for WV students age 16-19.  Scholarships provide funds toward a 5 week cultural exchange to Finland, Japan, or Australia (and possibly Italy).  Contest deadline is December 1, 2008.  Please see Mrs. DeBlossio for more information.

2.  New senior newsletters are available for November on the office counter.

3.  Promise Scholarship and WV Grant applications are now online at www.wvapply.com

4.  WVU admissions will be here on Wednesday, November 19 at 9:30 for on-the-spot admissions.  Seniors who wish to apply should see Mrs. Decker for an application and an information sheet.

5.   WV Radio Corporation is announcing the American Scholar Program at WV Wesleyan College.  This is a tuition and fee scholarship for four years.  Apply at www.wvmagic.com – Deadline is December 1.

6.   Alderson-Broaddus College will have a representative here on Thursday, November 20 at 9:15 to speak to any senior interested in applying to AB.

7.  Seniors who wish to register for the spring semester at Fairmont State should see Mrs. Decker for information.  Registration will be held December 1 thru December 4 at the Harrison County Board Office.
