Ms. Clagett's Homepage

Ms. Clagett visits Turkey 2007.

Sharon Clagett, M.A. CCC-SLP has been recognized for her National Certification by the State of West Virginia as having met the requirements by law and the West Virginia Board of Education.  Ms. Clagett received certification in speech language pathology in 1986 from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.  In 2006 Senate Bill 783 was passed by the West Virginia Legislature giving equal status to speech pathologists and audiologists who hold national certification just as teachers can be recognized for meeting national certification standards.

Speech pathologists are required to hold a master’s degree in speech pathology, pass a national exam, and complete rigorous practicum experiences during training.  In their first job setting the speech pathologist works with a certified supervisor and completes a clinical fellowship year.

In November 2006 the first 100 nationally certified speech pathologists, audiologists, and school counselors were recognized by West Virginia.  In December 2007, the second 100 were recognized.  This will hopefully continue until all nationally certified personnel are recognized.

Denise Jones, M.S. CCC-SLP also is nationally certified and is recognized by the West Virginia Legislature for her professional achievements.

Ms. Clagett's love for travel and adventure took her on a 22 state driving tour in 2010 during the summer.  She took her daughter, Bronwyn, on the adventure vacation.  Ms. Clagett and Bronwyn visited 4 presidential libraries, many historical landmarks, completed 14.5 hours of continuing education credit, St. Louis Art Museum (free admision), and one show in Vegas, Phantom Spectacular.

Ms. Clagett developed a social studies unit showing 4th and 5th grade students how she planned her trip and used technology.  This project grew to be the Hope Trunk Project with the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum.  Out of this fun study the Hope Bear School Project was completed by the Lumberport Elementary students.   LES students used the history of the bombing to learn about the senselessness of violence and about the need to use peaceful means to settle differences.

Lumberport Elementary was recognized as the First Hope Bear School in West Virginia.  All students in LES were invited to join in the Hope Bear School activities.  Fourth and Fifth grade students used the "First Person Program" with the Oklahoma City Natiional Memorial & Museum to interview a survivor of the bombing and the family member of a victim  by skype technology.  The two interview sessions were recorded and will be used to further the mission of the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum.

Lumberport Elementary students are to begin raising money to purchase a Survivor Tree Seedling to plant in front of the new Lumberport Elementary School currently under construction.  The Hope Bear School Project will be continued each year and has taken root at Lumberport Elementary.
