About me
I graduated from Fairmont State University with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education. I received my Master's Degree in reading in May of 2010. I have been teaching at Lumberport Elementary for five years and enjoy my time with students. For the past three years, I taught first grade and decided to make a change into second grade. It has been a rewarding experience and I look forward to the future. However, no matter the grade my goal is to enhance every child's education and push them toward successful educational opportunities.
*School Year Strategies*
Daily Reading Practice
In order to improve comprehension and fluency skills each child needs to read daily. The "Book Buddy" materials are to be read daily, even when new material is added. Vocabulary and amazing words are used to enhance oral language and word usage, please practice daily. Encouraging them to use these words throughout conversations will enhance their oral and written vocabulary.
Daily Spelling Practice
Spelling words are to be practiced daily. Techniques might include your child spelling the words orally, enabling your child to write their words three times each, playing spell games (ex. memory), or giving them practice tests.
Daily Math Practice
Addition, subtraction, time, and money can be practiced daily. Mclass Math Testing is a critical part of second grade that contains a variety of skills for students to master. Please practice math facts, missing number, larger quantity, and word problems. Please keep in mind that all tests are timed. These practices will enhance their mathematical skills and enhance success.
Daily Writing Practice
More emphasis has been placed on second grade writing skills this year. As a result, I have been working on the proper formation of sentences (capital letters and punctuation) and the parts of a sentence. Each section requires a lot of repetition and may take weeks to form. Praciticing with your child on these skills at home especially while writing spelling sentences will encourage proper formation and excel their writing skills. My goal, by the end of the year, is for students to combine their thoughts and form solid paragraphs, which in essence will prepare them for third grade.
