What is BASE?

BASE is an acronym for Basic Attitudes Skills and Experiences it is a 6th week family and consumer sciences exploratory course that teaches the life skills necessary to become a responsible person. The following units are examined:

  • Personal and Family Relationships
  • Nutrition and Foods
  • Social Skills
  • Crafts
  • Job Skills and Career Exploration
  • Citizenship
Focus for Each Grade
  • 8th Grade-School-to-Work
  • 7th Grade-Family Relationships, Social Skills, and Foods and Nutrition
  • 6th Grade-Craft Based Project/Citizenship/Manners

What is School-to-Work?

School-to-Work is a means of attaining high academic standards through contextual, applied, and focused learning. The School-to-Work Opportunities Act, signed into law in 1994, is administered by the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor. The Act provides funds to States and local communities to develop School-to-Work systems.
STW encourages exposure to a broad variety of career options. Its main focus is to provide students with knowledge and skills that will allow them to opt for college, additional training, or a well paying job directly out of high school.
Students are exposed to the different career clusters and at the end of the 8th grade year select one career cluster on which to focus. After selecting a career cluster, students develop their 5 year plans for high school and select those classes that will best help them on the way to their chosen career. Students develop a webpage outlining their career choice.  Choosing a career cluster in no way locks a student into a particular curriculum path but helps them focus on their interests.
