FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: WE HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED BY THE NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION OF THE RESULTS OF THE NATIONAL RANKINGS FOR JROTC THREE POSITION AIR RIFLE CHAMPIONSHIPS. THE ROBERT C BYRD HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY RIFLE TEAM PLACED 61ST IN THE NATION OUT OF APPROXIMATELY 2000 TEAMS NATION WIDE. THE JUNIOR VARSITY TEAM PLACED 84TH IN THE NATION. THESE STANDINGS ARE A RESULT OF THE NRA SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP THAT TOOK PLACE AT ROBERT C BYRD ON MARCH 22, 2008.
EMILY GRANT, A RECENT GRADUATE OF ROBERT C BYRD AND CAPTAIN OF THE 2007-2008 TEAM, PLACED 76TH OVER ALL IN THE NATIONAL COMPETITION WITH A SCORE OF 476 OUT OF A POSSIBLE 600. BRIAN WASHINGTON, A SOPHOMORE, PLACED 108TH OVER ALL AND FELICIA HOLLANDSWORTH, A SOPHMORE, PLACED 114 IN THE NATIONAL RANKING AGAINST APPROXIMATELY 8000 COMPETITORS. ALSO NATIONALLY RANKED WHERE HANNAH FRYZEL, 128TH, SHANE WILHELM, 131ST, DEREK SILSKI, 134TH, JUSTIN LEARY, 147TH, AND DANIEL BROWN, 158TH.THE RIFLE TEAM IS MADE UP OF JROTC CADETS AT ROBERT C BYRD HIGH SCHOOL WHO HAVE GONE THOUGH SAFETY TRAINING AND PRACTICE THREE DAYS A WEEK, COACHED BY 1SG BROWNFIELD. THE TEAM PARTICIPATES IN BETWEEN 12 AND 15 RIFLE MATCHES EACH YEAR.

The JROTC Rifle Team is a competitive team sponsored by the JROTC and supported by the school and the RCB Booster’s Club. The team starts its season in September and it finishes in May, making it one of the longest seasons in the athletic events at RCB HS.

The Rifle team has won nine state championships since its initial founding in 1993. The team was awarded a $3,800.00 grant from the National Rifle Association for new equipment and these new rifles will allow us to expand the team to a full 15 members during school year 2008 2009. During the 2007 - 2008 season the team participated in 12 matches and placed competitively in the West Virginia state competitions as well as the US Army Cadet Command's 7th Brigade match at Fort Knox, Kentucky. The team placed first in the North American Rifle Tourney that saw it compete against teams in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The team practices three nights a week, and participates in ten to fifteen rifle meets each season. Some of these meets are fired at other schools throughout the area. Traditionally, we shoot against Preston County High School, the Navy JROTC Detachment at Lincoln High School, Webster County High School, Capital High School and Preston County High School. The team has participated in regional events in Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky.
In 1999 and in 2006 the Rifle Team represented the State of West Virginia in the US National Championships in Atlanta, Georgia and at Fort Benning, Georgia.
