Dual Credit Classes for 2008-2009
WVU Extended Learning Access classes for high school students
Harrison County Schools has released the following information for dual credit classes for 2008-2009.  The following is a summary of the information from Lindy Bennett, Administrative Assistant.  Your child’s hard work to attain high academic rank in school affords a tremendous opportunity to earn college credits during their senior year.  The dual credit classes fulfill both college and high school requirements.  Harrison County Schools is pleased to offer this outstanding program in cooperation with Fairmont State University.  Since the school system implemented this program, many graduates have earned fifteen or twenty hours of college credit before graduating from high school.
Registration will take place May 5—May 8 between 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Harrison County Board of Education, 408 E.B. Saunders Way, 3rd floor.  Contact Linda Olivito at 326-7335 to make an appointment.  The fee for college classes is $75 per semester regardless of the number of courses taken and is due at the time of registration.  Checks should be made payable to Harrison County Schools.  Students should bring completed forms and payment that day.  If they have taken the ACT or SAT and are enrolling in a course that has an ACT/SAT requirement, they need to bring a copy of their scores with them.  Students who choose to schedule all college classes for their senior year remain enrolled in their home school without penalty.
The student is responsible for providing their own transportation to college classes.  If he/she plans to park in any of the designated Caperton Center parking areas they will be required to apply for a parking permit.  Any vehicle without a decal in any of the Caperton Center parking areas will be ticketed.  The cost of the permit is $90 per year. Should they choose not to purchase a parking permit, there are several metered spaces near the Caperton Center as well as several public parking lots. It is extremely important that he/she are actually enrolled in college and are fully responsible for their actions.  Failure to properly drop a class, if necessary, will result in a failing grade for the course and the grade will remain on their college transcript permanently.  Graduation from high school will be in jeopardy if your child fails a class taken for dual credit.  The type of credit declared by the student at registration will not be changed once classes begin.  Students will be required to follow Fairmont State’s calendar which may differ from the Harrison County School calendar and college courses  offered through WVU.  Students wishing to enroll in any of these courses may do so by registering at the WVU Extended Learning office located at Robert C. Byrd High School (627-2190).  Students are encouraged to take advantage of these courses.  More information call Lindy Bennett at 326-7338 or Linda Olivito at 326-7335.  WVU offers the following classes in high schools:  Math 126 College Algebra, Math 128 Plane Trigonometry, and Art 101 Appreciation of Visual Arts.  Math 126 College Algebra and Math 128 Plane Trigonometry.  For Fall 2008, the student should take the placement t4est in March or April.  Check with Mary Beth Moore for the test date here at SHHS.  Only students who have participated in Math 126 may take Math 128 in the spring of 2009.  These classes are offered during the regular school day.  Art 101 Appreciation of Visual Arts.  This course encompasses the study of outstanding works of the visual arts from past time to the present: (1) sources of the creative impulse, and (2) relationship of art to the civilization producing it.  Art 101 meets Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m. in the LGI room at Robert C. Byrd High School.  Self –motivated ACCESS students are welcome to try online courses.  Reliable internet access and email capabilities are essential.  These interactive and challenging courses require dedication and active participation.  Oneline courses often have students from many backgrounds.  Please note that these courses are offered at regular college tuition rates, which is approximately $600 per class depending on the course.  Online Courses:  Environmental Biology, Families Across the Lifespan, Introduction to Computer Applications, Planet Earth, Growth of American Nation to 1865, Making of Modern America:  1865 to Present, Introduction to Nutrition, Introduction to Western Civilization 1, Introduction to Mass Communication, Introduction to Ethics, Historical Introduction to Philosophy, Introduction to Critical Reasoning, Introduction to Psychology,  and Introduction to Theatre.
All students enrolling in college courses must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA.  Students enrolling in English 1104 must take the ACT and score at least 18 on the English subtest.  All credits should transfer to most in-state colleges and universities.  However, it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to verify college course requirements.  Courses offered at the Caperton Center are First Semester:  English 1104, Psychology 1101, American Gov., Italian I (blended course), and Folklore (blended course) and Second Semester: English 2230, Sociology 1110, and Financial Literacy.  To meet the senior requirement of Civics, students must take American Gov. 1st semester and Financial Literacy 2nd semester.
A student taking a dual credit class will receive 3 hours of college credit as well as receiving the high school credit.  The senior English credit can be achieved by taking both English 1104 and English 2230.
