English 11 offered 5th period and 4th block invites students to explore America’s development and history through novels, historical documents, non – fiction writing, short stories, poetry and drama. Throughout this comprehensive study of American authors, students will write to a variety of topics which include, but are not limited to historical research papers, autobiographical narratives, persuasive essays, and poetry. Students will also produce a researched and documented (MLA) power point presentation which evaluates the social and historical importance of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Other major works studied may include Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, and Mitch Albom’s Tuesday’s With Morrie.

Advanced Placement English Literature & Composition“engages students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of selected texts, students deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As they read, students consider a work’s structure, style, and themes as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone” (© 2006 The College Board).
