Terri Maxwell Family and Consumer Sciences (This used to be called Home Economics) The courses that I teach are:
BASE is an exploratory class for eighth graders. The purpose of this exploratory class is to introduce these students to the elective classes that I teach at the high school. During the six weeks they have BASE, they will experience some activities from each of the high school courses. Consumer Economics is a course in personal finance. The students will complete activities dealing with our economy, consumer rights and responsibilities, advertising, product testing, checking/savings accounts, paychecks, taxes, and consumer decision making. One of the favorite activities is learning to keep a checkbook. This class is available to any age group of students. Food Preparation covers food choices, nutrition, safety/sanitation, cooking terms, equipment during the first eight weeks of class. After that we cook almost every day! We do vegetable, fruit, potato, rice, pasta dishes. We bake several types of breads, cookies, etc., and even though they are not in the CSOs, we do a few meat dishes as the budget permits. Since the class size is limited, this course is normally available only to Juniors and Seniors. Parenting/Child Development is available to all students --yes--even boys! This class covers pregnancy, childbirth and development of children from birth to school age. |
