What college professors are saying after a study which surveyed more than 35,000 middle school teachers, high school teachers, guidance counselors, and postsecondary and remedial program teachers.  Problem:  College instructors and high school teachers do not agree.  ACT notes that the mismatch is not due to any actual shortcomings in the pool of teachers or an inadequacy of the student population itself.  Instead, ACT states that standards are simply too broad and not sufficiently deep to guarantee the mastery of skills and concepts that postsecondary teachers regard as important.  Findings:  In English and writing, college instructors place greater emphasis on the importance of basic grammar and usage skills than do high school teachers.  In match, college instructors look for a rigorous understanding of math fundamentals rather than brief exposure to more advanced content.  In reading, the specific key skills taught in middle school are not receiving sufficient reinforcement in high school.  In science, college teachers prefer science process and inquiry skills to the knowledge of specific science content.  The long-term solution to this mismatch, according to ACT, is for states to improve the alignment of their learning standards with the expectations and demands of colleges.  So what are high schools to do?  [  “Give the students the basic nuts and bolts of reading, writing, math, and science…”  Hold the students to the plan until mastery. ]  Information for this overview came from Cambridge TestPrep PLUS.  **** Bottom line is that students need to come to school motivated to learn and to achieve via hardwork and dedication.  ****
