Syllabus 2008-2009                              Algebra I                               Mrs. Lori Cobb

Objective: Algebra I is a course that provides the gateway to all higher mathematics courses.  Algebraic representations will be used to generalize and the algebraic method will be viewed as a problem-solving tool. This class will lead you into  mathematics concepts necessary for all other required classes.

Text Book: Algebra II, Glenco

Materials: Students must come to class prepared—with textbook, loose leaf paper, binder/folder, pencil and completed assignments.

Grades: This course utilizes the West Virginia State Grading Scale

93-100 A

85-92   B

75-84   C

65-74   D

0-64     F

Grades will be calculated based on points.  The points earned are totaled and then divided by the total possible points at the end of the six week to determine the six weeks letter grade.  Each six weeks grade will be averaged to determine the semester grade.  A passing grade of D or higher must be received or the class must be repeated.  Students will receive information and will be able to keep track of grades on an internet site.

Late Work: Work will be accepted one day late, with a penalty of half of the points taken away.  After that one day has passed a grade of zero will be given.

Class Assignments:  When an assignment is to be completed in class it will be taken up at the end of the class period, if not complete and the student has been working and using their time wisely it may be turned in the next class day.  If it is not completed and a student has not been working or using time wisely it may be turned in the next day, but will be counted as late.  Some class assignments will be started in class and finished for homework for all students.

Homework: Homework will be graded daily for completion at the beginning of the class period.  If it is not complete it may be turned in the next day, but half of the points will be taken off.  Randomly homework will be collected and graded for correct answers.

Quizzes: Quizzes can be announced or unannounced.  They will cover recent skills.

Tests:  Tests will be announced in advance.  Tests will concentrate on skills learned in class, through assignments and through homework.  Tests must be taken by all students present on test day.  If a student is absent on test day; the day the student returns to school, arrangements must be made to take the test.

Absences: It is the student’s responsibility to inquire about make-up assignments on class calendar/folder and to get the notes taken during the class they missed.  Students have one day for each day missed to complete make-up work per county policy.

This is a 45 minute Class, typically one section will be covered every two days, and some concepts will take more days to master.  The content that will be covered in the class according to the WV CSO’s is as follows.
