SOUTH HARRISON MIDDLE SCHOOL We would like for you to be aware of the Harrison County Policy related to first semester exams for middle school students, particularly section 4502.5.1 on page 19 in the 2007-2008 Policy and Administrative Regulations Guide that was provided to each student in August.
In lieu of first semester exams, all middle school students will be taking a standardized “diagnostic test” closely resembling the WESTEST. The tests will be given on the semester exam days of January 16, 17, and 18, 2008. All SHMS students are to attend school each of these days. The exam schedule will be provided to students and staff.
The tests are diagnostic, and will be used to determine any areas of weakness that need to be addressed prior to the WESTEST. The results will also be utilized to assign noontime AA Re-teach classes for the second semester.
We ask that you encourage your child to do his/her very best on these tests so we may get a true and accurate picture of what your child has learned thus far this year. These diagnostic tests include materials that are to be covered throughout the year, including concepts that may not have been taught yet. Each class will review for two or three days prior to the test.
We ask that you check your child’s review and/or study guides, and help them prepare for the upcoming assessments. Students should also review any notes, tests, bell-ringers, and chapters read so far this year.
The first semester average in the core classes will be calculated using an average of the three six-week grades and will be recorded on the report card.
Students who are taking Algebra 1 or Spanish 1A or 1B will take a regular semester exam in these courses as they count for high school credit. The exam grade will factor into their semester averages in these classes. If you have questions about these exams, please speak with the class teacher.
