Go to Collegeboard.com; click the "for students" link, sign up for the question of the day (if you don't have email you can still do today's question online).
Have you figured out the correct answer? It is "E"--all the other choices result in dangling modifiers. After all the trail isn't looking up the base of the mountain, is it?

FACULTY INPUT WANTED:
SHHS/MS Academic Boosters would like to invite all teachers to submit any academic goals for the student body that they wish the boosters to help encourage and to help accomplish. We are working on our strategic planning for long-term goals and would welcome input from our teachers. You may join the academic boosters' online group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SHHSABC/ or you can attend a meeting. The next meeting is November 5 at 6pm. Monthly meetings are typically held the second Monday of the month at 6pm.
FOOD DONATIONS FOR NEEDY
Our families are encouraged to contribute food items for the upcoming Holidays. Mr. Larry Skiviat has again volunteered to head up this collection effort. Larry asks that boxed items (rice, stuffing, potatoes, salad dressings, macaroni/cheese, etc.) be included this year with the canned items. If families would like to contribute frozen chickens or turkeys this year we will make sure they go to local deserving homes. Call Mr. Skiviat or Mr. Brown for further information.

THE “D RULE” – by p brown
We thank our families for providing both supportive and suggestive comments regarding our attempt to set higher academic expectations here at South Harrison Middle/High School. Be assured we are open to designing the best possible policy that evenly impacts each and every student throughout grades 6-12. While we have given South Harrison’s Academic Booster Group the charge of broadening this policy for implementation next year, feel free to contact the administration with your ideas for refinement.
REMINDER TO 8TH GRADE STUDENTS from Mr. Howard
8th graders participating in the science fair, experiment/research plans need to be submitted to Mr. Howard BEFORE Thanksgiving break. Thank you.
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
The high school and middle school God Squads are participating in Operation Christmas Child, which is a project of Samaritan’s Purse. Desiree Ferrell, a graduate of South Harrison, presented information regarding the project and gave students the opportunity to sign up if they chose. Students are collecting small items to be included in a shoe box that will be sent to needy children in other parts of the world who have very little. This is a small way to have an impact that is far reaching. The deadlines for box submission were Friday, November 2 to Mr. Turnbull or Monday, November 5 to Mrs. Dean. Thanks to all who participated in this worthy cause.

WAYS TO BE HEALTHY
With “staph” (bacteria carried on the skin or in the nose) and MRSA (a type of staff resistant to antibiotics) infections prevailing, it is important to remember many different ways to be healthy.
· Be sure to keep all wounds and sores covered.
· Next, don’t touch someone else’s wounds and sores.
· Keep your hands clean with soap and water. Remember, you should be able to sing through an entire verse of Old Macdonald while washing your hands.
· Don’t share towels, clothes, beverages, and other stuff.
· Stay clean (bathe regularly) and wear clean clothes.
· Don’t take antibiotics unless needed.
· Eat healthy foods regularly.
· Drink plenty of water.
· Exercise regularly.
· Get plenty of rest.
Follow these steps for a healthy lifestyle!

STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN WRITING CONTESTS
Three students from Public Speaking class are entering the Voice of Democracy speech competition sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Kayla Burch, Cassandra Coen, and Daniel Yoke have spent the past couple of weeks writing their essays and practicing their speeches. Recordings of their speeches will be submitted by November 1 to the local VFW post. This year’s theme is My Role in Honoring America’s Veterans. Winners compete at the district level and can advance to the state level and ultimately the national level. Good luck to those students.
Mr. Turnbull’s English 10 class have been writing essays for a classroom competition where the top 3 boys and top three girls will have their essays submitted to the Project on Racism Contest sponsored by the YWCA of Wheeling. This year’s theme is “Inheriting a world house: learning to live together peacefully, describe how Dr. King’s dream for equality around the world can become a reality.” Students have done some small projects designed to give them an opportunity to understand the mindset of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Brainstorming for the essays took place in class, and students were then challenged to take what they have learned and apply it in response to the essay theme. Classroom winners will have their essays submitted by November 1 to the State Coordinator for the MLK Essay Contest.
Five students from Ms. Dyer’s English classes have also recently participated in the Patriot’s Pen contest. Keirsten Reider, Kayla Highland, Paige Myers, Brittney Grimes, and Caitlin Miller each wrote a 300-400 word essay on the topic “Why I am an American Patriot”. Students who are selected winners of this competition have a chance to win $50-$10,000 in United States Savings Bonds.
