Special Announcements Second Grade students are beginning to transition to cursive handwriting. The importance of good posture, slant, letter form and spacing are being stressed with sequencial acquisition of lower case and capital letters. It is expected that students will master basic concepts by the end of the school year. What's Happening! Classes have been practicing for reading fluency by reading and rereading pasages and decoding new or unknown words by using phonics rules for various blends, digraphs, and "rules breakers." The use of choral rading, reader's theatre and expressive oral reading are helping students master a good foundation of reading skills for use in comrehension and a love for literature and reading. In the mathematics area, students are counting money, making change and learning best practices for mental calculations of sums and differences. Continued review of fact families, number patterns and practical application of number skills to everyday life are a daily focus. Each day begins with journaling basic facts for the number of the day which coincides with the number of days school has been in session. |
