SUMMER READING CHALLENGE!
West MilfordElementary School
We all know the importance of reading. During the summer months children often read a lot less. In order to promote reading in the summer, West Milford Elementary is having a Summer Reading Challenge. The challenge is for all students that will be in grades K-5 next school year. The goal for students entering Kindergarten through 2nd grade for the 2014-2015 school year is to read for 250 minutes. If your children can not read well yet, Parents may help by reading to them. The goal for students entering 3-5 for the 2014-2015 school year is 250 pages. If you read 15 pages/minutes at least 2-3 times a week, you can easily reach this goal before summer is over. Take advantage of the time right before bed to have your child read to you. You can start as soon as possible.
Papers will be due when we come back to school. Please help your student find a safe place for the recording paper (refrigerator, special drawer, bulletin board, bedroom mirror, etc…). Keep track of your minutes or pages throughout the summer. If the paper gets lost, simply track your reading on any blank paper.
We are using the same reward as last year in try to increase participation. Those students that reach the goal and turn in the paper will be invited to a celebration in September. They will have the privilege of attending a comedy show. The top readers from each grade will get to RIDE THE FIRE TRUCK around the town!!!! So make sure you don’t stop at the goal. Please help your child so they don’t miss out on the fun.
·Goal- K-2= 250 minutes
·Goal- 3-5= 250 pages

It has been wonderful working with your child in the library this year. It is my sincere hope that they continue to read and enjoy all books have to offer throughout the summer. Please visit our local Harrison County Libraries and take advantage of all they have to offer all members of your family. Did you know that our local Lost Creek Library was selected as one of the 2013 Best Small Libraries in the country?
A list of summer reading suggestions and reading websites is included on the WMES website under the Library link.
One of the reading programs West Milford received this year through a grant is TUMBLEBOOKS.TumbleBooks Library is an online collection of animated, talking picture books which teach students of all ages the joys of reading in a format they'll love. It contains a wide selection of books, fiction and nonfiction, with related quizzes, games and other activities. Please encourage your child to use it this summer.
