Mr. Allen Gorrell, Member
Harrison County Board of Education
Allen is a native of Harrison County born in Clarksburg and reared in Stonewood and Nutter Fort, the son of Carl and Mary Gorrell. He is married to Janet (Lemasters) Gorrell, a retired Harrison County teacher with 30 years experience. They are the parents of two sons, Josh a teacher and head football coach at RCB High and Jake, a contractor and owner of Gorrell Contracting and Remodeling. He has one grandson, Parker.
Allen is a product of Harrison County Schools having attended Norwood Grade and Jr. High and graduated from Roosevelt Wilson High in 1960 where he was a member of the 1958 WV State AA Champion football team. He is a graduate of WVU in 1965 with a B.S. and 1970 with a M.S. In addition he earned 80 post graduate hours beyond his masters from both WVU and Marshall University. From 1966 to 1969 Allen served his country in the US Army which included a tour of duty in Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division.
He began his 38 year career in education at the Industrial School for Boys in Pruntytown where he worked as a counselor from 1969 to 1973. In 1973 he returned to Harrison County Schools as a teacher and coach at Lumberport Elementary and Lumberport Middle until 1978. In 1978 he was named principal at Wyatt Elementary and from there served in a succession of principal positions at Enterprise Elementary, Hartman Elementary, Morgan Elementary and Nutter Fort Primary, where he retired in 2007. In addition to his work in Harrison County he also worked from 1995 to 2009 as an evaluator of schools and county school systems for the WV Office of Education Performance Audits. He is currently employed as a part time associate at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home in Clarksburg.
His community service has included the following: A member of Clarksburg Baptist Church since 1973 where he has served as a deacon, Chair of Finance Committee and Vice-Chair of Stewardship Commission and Chair of the Children's Commission; past state president of the WV Baptist Convention Young Adults; former member of the Harrison County YMCA - Board of Directors; former member of the Harrison County Easter Seal Grants Committee; former member of the Clarksburg Planning and Zoning Commission; former coach of Clarksburg Central Little League; present member of VFW Post 573 in Clarksburg.
