Dave Marshall and Ronald Romeo, Bridgeport High School teachers, were named the Harrison County Board of Education’s February and March Employees of the Month. They were recognized at the March 2, 2010, Board of Education meeting.
They were honored together since they were both nominated by the same family, Robert and Nellie Nixon. The Nixons nominated them for their heroic actions that saved their son’s life on Jan. 2, 2010.
On that day, the bus driver, John Messenger, and his aide, Aisha Duke, noticed that Robert Nixon III was unresponsive when they were arriving at school. Mr. Messenger called ahead and alerted the school to a “code blue,” a medical emergency in progress. At that time, Mr. Romeo and Mr. Marshall, on early morning bus duty, sprang into action.
They ran to the bus to find Robert not breathing and without a pulse. They immediately started CPR and went beyond their duties as teachers to become lifesavers. Without them, it is unlikely Robert would be alive today.
These parents nominated both Dave Marshall and Ronald “Hawk” Romeo to show their gratitude for saving their son’s life. They say that knowing we have people like them working in the school system gives them confidence to put their son back on that bus every day and that is worth more than anyone could know.
They were congratulated and presented with several gifts, including plaques from MCM Business Systems and dinner at Philip’s Pasta Cucina.
