Deborah Spears, December 2009 Employee of the Month

Deborah Spears, a physical education and dance teacher, and also the Wellness Coordinator at Liberty High School, was named the Harrison County Board of Education’s December Employee of he Month. She was recognized during the board’s Dec. 8, 2009, meeting.

In her daily work, she inspires and encourages students to become fit for life. But it’s her special connection with her students that she’s taken time to develop that makes her such an irreplaceable teacher.

While she works well with all types of students, Deborah has a particular gift for working with those with learning disabilities. She makes modifications that will challenge the students to achieve tasks they have never dreamed about in gym or dance class. Further, she has become involved in the education of students with an autistic diagnosis.  As a volleyball coach, she reserved the position of team manager for one of the autistic students. Thus student has flourished greatly because of this teacher’s interaction and attention.

In addition to her concern for the students to make smart diet and exercise choices, Deborah is involved in charities to service Liberty and the community. These include Red Cross Blood Drives, clothing bank for disadvantaged students and a scholarship program for seniors. She shows a genuine concern and a love for her job.

For being named the December Employee of the Month, she was presented with several gifts. She is shown with Board member Michael Queen and Principal Dennis Zahradnik
