Big Elm Elementary School
Mr. Richard Lantz, Principal

Title I and primary classroom teachers at Big Elm Elementary have earned the right to bask in their success.  They are in the second year of an imbedded staff development initiative to increase teacher expertise and student achievement.  Professional collaboration with Lynn Birus, nationally renowned guided reading consultant, has made this goal possible.  As a result of much diligence, hard work, and dedication, Big Elm is a model school, attracting the attention of colleagues in schools throughout the district and state.  Classroom and Title I teachers are learning and working together to expand their leveled library, restructuring classrooms to foster a literacy-rich teaching environment, and learning to level guided reading books.

Title I Teachers Conduct Action Research:

John DeMarco and Janet Dotson will be monitoring student progress in extended day programs at Big Elm.  Their research question--"Is before and after-school tutoring going to make a difference in a child's success in school?"  DeMarco and Dotson will analyze student performance on WESTEST to create a checklist of items relating to student learning and individual needs.  Individualized instruction during before and after school programs will support the identified needs of each student.  The interventions will  also include using West Virginia's i-Know Website, an instructional tool for creating practice tests with items to promote student mastery of content standards.

Art Classes Paint Mural of Big Elm Elementary:
Under the skilled direction of art teacher, Carolyn Light, students research stylistic characteristics of artist Vincent VanGogh to help them create a mural of their school community.  The project promotes the six pillars of character as a theme for the artistic rendering.  The finished wall is a source of beauty, pride and artistic accomplishment for Big Elm students.
