West Milford Elementary Sponsors New Vocabulary Program
Some teachers commit to explicit vocabulary instruction as part of their reading program. Students are learning to use tier two vocabulary--those words that are more sophisticated and accurate language for reading, writing, and speaking. In the new approach, students listen to stories that focus on tier two vocabulary words, practice using the words with picture and word cards, and keep track of the number of times they hear and use these words in meaningful situations. Stephanie Runion, Title I Reading Specialist, is conducting an action research project. Runion seeks answers to the differences in student achievement when teaching explicit vocabulary lessons in a classroom setting versus a small group setting.
