Wilsonburg Elementary Initiates Math Days
The Program
Math Days takes place once per month. All the students attend and engage in hands on mathematical activities. Each day is built around five standards of mathematics, and incorporates CSO's from the state to improve our student’s mathematical skills and knowledge base. Wonderful take-home activity sets were given to children with the help of a $4000 grant from Dominion Hope. Title I has also contributed to the Math Days and the sets of manipulatives.
“Math Day”, implemented by Title I, at Wilsonburg Elementary this year is providing to be very beneficial to students in investigative type math procedures. The program addresses the five math standards each month by providing activities that address the various CSO’s. Parents assist with the program. Carol Curotz, Title I teacher is shown with students as they count the votes and begin compiling the data to determine which activity the students enjoyed the most.
We encourage any parent willing to give a little time to volunteer to assist with one or more of the Math Day activities. All parents need to do is show up and be ready for a busy fun-filled morning with children
The Motivation
Wilsonburg Elementary is a rural school that has approximately 200 students in preschool through fifth grade. Approximately 72% of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch, making it a Title I school. While preparing a needs assessment section of the Title I plan, it was found that the school was deficient in math. The results of the Informal Math Assessment provided data for the primary students and the results of the WESTEST provided data for the intermediate students. The identified math needs include: measurement, numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, and data analysis and probability.
The Solution
To meet the math needs of the school, the Title I planning committee proposed implementation of Math Days for the 2005 2006 school year. Each month, a Math Day will be planned which provides students with the activities that will incorporate various math concepts. The activities will be hands-on, use manipulatives, and be modified to meet the needs for each grade level. During the Math Day, students will rotate through math stations where they will participate in the activities. The Title I teachers will plan and coordinate these days with assistance of the schools planning teachers. Parents and high school students will be recruited to assist on Math Days.
To evaluate the effectiveness of the Math Days, the IMA and the WESTEST results for the 2005 2006 school year will be compared with earlier results.
