Wilsonburg Elementary Initiates Math Grant
The Program
All Wilsonburg Elementary students received a Math Manipulative Kit to take home and keep. The kits contained developmentally appropriate math manipulatives that students are familiar using at school. These manipulatives will help students learn math concepts, aid with homework, and assist parents in helping their children with math at home. The kits were provided by a $4,000 grant from Dominion written by Title I teacher Mrs. Kim Pulice.
The Motivation
Wilsonburg Elementary is a rural school that has approximately 200 students in preschool through fifth grade. Approximately 72% of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch, making it a Title I school. While preparing a needs assessment section of the Title I plan, it was found that the school was deficient in math. The results of the Informal Math Assessment provided data for the primary students and the results of the WESTEST provided data for the intermediate students. The identified math needs include: measurement, numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, and data analysis and probability
