 Miss Rhodes' Fantastic First Graders

First, let me say a BIG Thank You to all of the families associated with our classroom for your patience, help and support as I have been working hard to become familiar with a new school, new town, and new county. It is truly appreciated.

We are doing big things in first grade. It is a transition from Kindergarten to First Grade in working to become more independent. Students are asked to be more responsible for their actions and their belongings. Folders are checked by the students each morning. Students are to write in their agendas before the end of the day, unless otherwise specified.

OCTOBER:
In math we are working on number sense to 120, grouping and counting by tens and turn around facts, as well as introducing place value of two digit numbers and fact families. We are using pumpkins as our nonfictional focus in reading to help us learn short i words and decoding and comprehension strategies. Each student recieved a mini pumpkin and we have worked hard as scientists to observe, examine, and record information. We learned that given enough water, all pumpkins FLOAT! In writing, we are working on an opinion piece about Scarecrows.

We are working hard on learning what books are a best fit for us to read. Look for more books to be sent home in the upcoming weeks and remember to read with your students every night.

Please let me know if you have any concerns. My door is always open.
