About Mrs. Rice
I am a graduate form WVU and have taught for 21 years. I have taught preschool, kindergarten, first, second, and fifth grades, as well as learning disabilities. I have a masters degree, a specialization in early childhood, plus 48 hours.
I believe that children learn best by being engaged in meaningful hands on activities. I believe in Balanced Literacy which includes, reading, listening, writing, word work, and literacy stations. Children are placed into small groups based on their reading levels in order to allow for more individualized instruction. While I meet with the reading groups, the other children are engaged in learning centers including: computer station, language arts games, word work station, library, buddy reading, listening center, and writing station.
I use Investigations for math. Children are learning math sense through games and projects. They are not only performing math problems, but thinking about how they are arriving at their answers. They keep math journals where they write about their experiences with daily math projects.
We have a writing workshop at the end of each day. I teach a five minute mini lesson with a writing focus for the day and then children are engaged in writing small moment stories about their own lives. They write for about thirty minutes while I circulate around the room holding conferences with individual students. We end the workshop by sharing our writing.
