4404.1 Role of the School
4404.1.1
The administration of any medication during school hours is strongly discouraged.
Parents should consult with their child’s doctor to see if medications can be given only during
non-school hours.
4404.1.2
If circumstances make it necessary for students to receive medication at school, ide-
ally the teacher (as defined in the West Virginia Code 18A-5-1) or other approved designated,
qualified individual stands in place of the parent and shall supervise the administration of all
medications.
4404.1.3
The principal will assign the responsibility of medication administering to those
individuals who meet a satisfactory level of competence following appropriate training.
4404.1.4
In accordance with the provisions of state law, the school nurse shall determine if
the prescribed medication may be safely delegated to designated qualified personnel.
4404.1.5
If a student requires medications at a school related event (WVBOE Policy 2510), it
is the responsibility of the parent to coordinate the provision of such medication with the prin-
cipal or school nurse.
4404.2 Supplies and Medications
4404.2.1
Parents are responsible for furnishing all medications and/or any necessary medical
supplies.
4404.2.2
All medicines must be sent to school in the original container, labeled with the
child’s name and exact directions for administering the medication. School personnel shall
refuse to give medication from an unmarked container.
4404.2.3
Medicines and/or supplies shall be delivered to the school by the parent/guardian
and not the student. Controlled substances must be counted in the presence of two staff mem-
bers and documented in writing.
4404.2.4
Any leftover medication and/or supplies shall be picked up by the parent at the end
of the school term or when the medication has been discontinued or expired. If the parent/
guardian does not retrieve the medicine, the principal and school nurse will dispose of it into
the waste removal system. At no time shall leftover medication be returned to the student.
