SIMPSON ELEMENTARY LIBRARY

About Mrs. Hill
I grew up in upstate New York and graduated from Brigham Young University back in the dark ages! I received my Library Certification from the University of Montana. I have lived in the East, the West and the South, and love living in West Virginia, especially in the fall. I have four children and two grandsons, plus my famous cat, Oreo. I love to quilt and of course to read.

AUGUST-SEPTEMBER NEWS

Welcome back to school.  You will notice that the School District has provided us with new furniture for the library.  We will not miss the blue metal shelves at all!  We have lots more space now for displays and bulletin boards, and a wonderful new check out desk.  Please stop by and seeing our remodel.
We also have a new theme this year for our Reading Program, based on Eric Carle's wonderful caterpillar  "SIMPSON STUDENTS ARE VERY HUNGRY FOR GOOD BOOKS".
Thanks to the PTA again for providing prizes for the Reading Program, for sponsoring the Book Fair (we were able to purchase over 100 new books for the library) and especially to Mrs. Walker for all her hard work!
My Library Goals
First and foremost is to cultivate a love for reading and for books.
Second is to teach students to access information, both through books and through computer technology.
Third is to support the School Curriculum and assist teachers by providing resources and information
Library Curriculum
The Library Curriculum is based on recommendations by the State Department of Education. My basic schedule for each class is:
Kindergarten-A theme-based Storytime and a short browsing time. Kindergarten students begin checking books out after Christmas vacation.
1st and 2nd Grade-A theme based Storytime and then time to find books for checkout. Book related activities are provided to work on in extra time. We feature some of our star Authors monthly during the Storytimes.
3rd and 4th Grade-A read aloud chapter book, followed by Library Instruction and then check out time.
5th Grade-Library and Research Instruction, followed by book checkout.
POLICIES
Students check out on their assigned Library day, but may also come in before school in the morning, or at other times arranged by their teacher.  Students may check out books as follows:
Kindergarten-1 book
1st, 2nd-2 books
3,4,5--3 books
Books check out for two weeks and may be renewed if no one is waiting for them.  Students with a book more than a  month overdue may not check out until it is returned or paid for. Notices are sent home to notify parents of overdue books.  Please contact me if you have some concerns about a lost or damaged book, or questions about the policy.

STAR AUTHORS
I have many favorite authors and feature at least one of them each month in my storytelling. The students should be well acquainted with my favorite, Steven Kellogg, as well as Lois Ehlert, Jan Brett, Marc Brown, Tomie dePaola and many others.
LIBRARY SKILLS
The students are taught library skills which help the to find books in the library, find information in reference books and access the internet for reliable information on topics of interest. The students give oral and written book reports and  study about different kinds of literature—poetry, fairy tales, folk tales and informational books.  In conjunction with their classroom teachers and Mrs. Morrison in the Computer Lab, the 2-5 grade students will also being doing research and preparing a presentation on a topic of inerest.
SIMPSON STUDENTS ARE VERY HUNGRY FOR GOOD BOOKS
This is the new theme for our School-wide Reading Incentive Program. Every student sets a goal and records all the books they read. Each class will have it's own VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR and when a student meets his goal, his circle will be added to his class caterpillar on our bulletin board.   The PTA provides prizes for each student who meets his goal.   I encourage parents to help students to read and record their books so every student can win!

Connect to what the Library has
Check out the Home Page on the OPAC site for Simpson.  It has many links that the students will be using this year as they do research and look for good books to read.
