Dear Students and Parents,

On Snow Days in order to keep up computer skills students can work on TechKnowledge, which teaches the Microsoft Office Suite, as well as Windows programs, such as Paint, using software, using devices such as scanners, etc., Internet skills and even more importantly, it includes an keyboarding program, Qwerty that helps students learn keys and has an additional keyboarding program, Paws, included.

I urge the children to do the Tech Knowledge lessons on snow days to keep their computer skills current.

TECH KNOWLEDGE

Also, the On-line Writing Assessment is coming shortly.  It is part of the WesTest scores, so I urge the students in grades 3-5 to practice typing skills for this very important on-line test.  They can concentrate more on their story, rather than typing if the typing comes naturally.  Please encourage your child to practice skills.

Again,  http://www.freetypinggame.net/  has learning lessons, Tech Knowledge (Qwerty) has learning lessons.  They need to learn the letters first and I have several games to reinforce typing skills.

Some new typing games, as well as those listed previously listed below this:

Due to continuous testing during computer class and seeing only one third grade twice a week, our computer-skills curriculum has fallen somewhat behind.  Please see that your child practices keyboarding and word processing skills as much as possible at home, particularly keyboarding.  Due to testing during computer class, we haven't been able to cover as much.  Grades K-2 are doing well, however, most classes are seen one time a week, so we are not able to cover as much as in years previous, so some students are still not feeling confident as they could be by now. In an effort to make them more comfortable with technology, please allow your child to do Tech Knowledge at home.  This is a fun way to learn computer basics, all of the Office products, Microsoft Paint, Keyboarding, Internet skills, using Scanners, digital cameras, etc.  It is a great program and can be done at home as well.  I would loved to have done the Christmas Power Point projects, Valentine's Day, etc as in the past, however, time does not permit us to do so, as most classes are seen only once a week, now, and the upper grades have been testing during computer class. Once testing is completed for this period, we will be concentrating efforts towards learning Office products such as Power Point and Word, as well as keyboarding in preparation for the on-line writing assessment coming in the spring for grades 3-5.  Along with learning tech skills, there are also great links for learning addition facts, subtraction and multiplication are available to the students.  I made  links along the side of this page.  These are great, fun ways to memorize facts!
Anytime your child uses the computer at home,  he/she will become more comfortable with technology, therefore, whenever you can allow them to use your home computer, it will benefit your child greatly.  Thank you and please let me know if your child experiences any problems, and I will try to work towards alleviating them as quickly as possible, whether it be making them a "helper" to increase their confidence, or work one-on-one with them if need be.
Also, thanks to all that have sent empty ink cartridges and to Mrs. Duez and the PTA for working hard to revitalize this valuable program.
Sincerely, Miss Martino

In grades 3-5, we will be concentrating our efforts toward keyboarding.  It would be wonderful if they could practice this skill at home as well.  The students have a free typing program in Tech Knowledge (click on link below).  They will log in and click on the Qwerty character.  Their are 2 programs in this section.  One Qwerty and the other is Paws.  Any practice in keyboarding is good practice. With writing assessments and other on-line testing on the rise, it is imperative that the students work on keyboarding skills, especially since we only see each other twice a week.  There are also many fun on-line keyboarding activities.  Click on any of the links below and thank you for helping at home with this important and lifelong skill.

Please be aware that students are not to take the Math Benchmark tests at home.  Thank you.

Kindergarten students may work on all areas, particularly, Brain Busters, which contains lessons to help them prepare for Dibels testing.
