1. Your child's agenda book and take-home folder should come home every evening and back the next day. I remind them of this every evening. Please sign and I will check the following morning for any notes or correspondence. This is a great way to teach responsibility with your child.

2. I will send home a list of spelling words and vocabulary words on the first day of the week. I have them put the lists in their take-home folder when I past them out. Our test will be on the last day of each week.

3. Please remember to send a note when your child is absent, going home a different way than usual or must take medications. Thanks!!

4. Each week our class will have a DEAR Drawing. I will send home DEAR Slips at the beginning of school for the nine weeks. Please put these slips in a safe place. All you have to do is read with your child at home and fill out the DEAR Slip and  return to school on Friday each week. We will have a DEAR Drawing then for a winner. Each participant will receive a reward for reading at home. Remember the slip must be filled out by the parent. DEAR stands for Drop Everything And Read. Read! Read! Read!

5. Spelling Words- joy, noise, royal, moist, broil, cowboy, spoil, joint, foil, enjoy, destroy, loyal, employee, corduroy, turquoise.

6. Vocabulary Words- 1. trouble- something that is difficult or upsetting 2. giant- very large or huge 3. chuckle- a laugh quietly 4. fair- just and by the rules 5. strong- having great power or strength 6. block- part of a city or town 7. tears- drops of salty water that come from your eyes.

7. We will be studying adverbs, diphthongs (oi,oy), vocabulary, plot/theme, measurement with inches, feet and yards, dental health, cursive(l,h,k,f,b), and 5 step writing process.

 8. If you have any concerns, please feel free to send a note or call the school and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

9. Tardies- Class begins promptly at 8:00. Your child should be at school by 7:50 so they can get to the room, check in with me, put their things away, sharpen their pencil and be ready to begin class at 8:00. If they are eating breakfast and you bring them they should be here by 7:40 so they have time to eat and get the the room. If your child comes in durning exercise they are considered tardy. Exercise is part of our P.E. plan. The state requires 90 minutes of P.E. a week and this is the way we get all of our time. Thank you for your help in this matter. When they come in late they are behind and miss instruction.

10. Just a reminder- Your child is not to bring toys or other things to play with at school. I have purchased things for them to play with outside and inside at recess or PAT Time. Thanks for your help in this matter.

11. MATH GAME BAG- I sent home a game bag of the games we have learned in math class. These are for your child to practice at home. You may play the games anytime you would like to practice. I will assign games during the week for your child to practice. PLEASE KEEP THESE IN A SAFE PLACE. WE WILL BE USING THEM ALL YEAR TO PRACTICE. I SENT  HOME AN ADDITIONAL BAG OF NEW GAMES WE HAVE LEARNED ON DECEMBER 15, 2011. Thank you for your help in this matter. I hope you have fun playing the games with your child.

12. Planning Period Schedule will be: Monday- Music, Tuesday- Computer, Wednesday- Music, Thursday- P.E. (remember to wear gym shoes), Friday- Library.

13. Live Grades- I sent home a letter explaining how to register for Live Grades. I sent home the letter on Monday, August 29, 2011. You may use this to check your child's grades as well as their conduct.

14. Conduct Cuts- We have been hard at work practicing our rules for the classroom and school. These were discussed in my WELCOME TO MR. BROWN'S CLASS MEMO. Please refer to the memo for an explanation. We do not color dots for behavior in my class. I feel the children are responsible enough to share with you when they get home if they had to pull a stick for breaking a rule. They should be able to tell you what rule they broke and how they are going to do better. The ones that received a stick will sit with me and they must tell me the rule they broke and what they will do to correct this behavior. The others get to pick a perfered activity to do while we talk. Please know if they pull a stick they have been warned and they received the stick because they continued to choose to break a rule. Thank you for your help in this matter. I want the children to learn to be responsible for their behavior and work this year. Responsibility is so important to learn for life's experiences.

15. MATH FACTS- This year our goal to to have quick recall of basic addition and subtraction facts to 18. I gave your child a timed test on the facts this week. I sent home the results of the test on January 30, 2012. This is not a grade. It is only to see what facts  they knew. They were given 5 minutes for the addition and 5 minutes for the subtraction to complete. This will be part of their homework each week. You may use flash cards, games, etc. to practice. This is one of our content standards in second grade to have quick recall of the facts without using their fingers. I have taught them strategies to add and subtract. They are explained in the cover letter of the facts I am sending home. I also include two blank pages so you can quiz your child when they have studied the facts. We will have a timed test on the facts at the end of each month. Our next timed test will be on February 24, 2012. Our goal is to learn more each month and do better than we did the month before. Your child should have these facts mastered by the end of second grade.

16. Good News Club- This began on October 13, 2011. If your child is going to participate, you must fill out the purple permission form and return with your child. Also, please send a note each week if they are attending. You may just jot it in their planner if you like. This will help me to get them where they are to go for that day. Thanks for your help in this matter.

17. Box Tops- Continue collecting and saving your box tops for education. Please return them each Friday. Our school gets 10 cents for each box top. This helps with the cost of buying our agenda books for next year. Thank you for your help!

18. Cursive Writing- We will be starting cursive writing when we return from Holiday Break. Your child will have cursive writing homework every evening and on weekends also. This will take 10 minutes at the most. I will introduce a letter in class and they will finish practicing the letter and return the paper each day. Please see they have a place to sit at a table or desk to practice the letter. The children are very excited to learn cursive. Thank you for your help in this matter.

19. Valentine's Party- February 14, 2012, at 1:30.

20. Parent-Teacher Conferences- February 20, 2012, from 3:00-6:00.

21. Valentine Boxes or Bags- Your child will make their Valentine boxes or bags at home and bring them to school on February 13 or 14. Please do not send them sooner. We don't have much space for longer than 2 days. I sent home a Valentine list with the children in my February Newsletter.

25, Student Teacher- We will  have a student teacher from Fairmont University. Her name is Mrs. Wadsworth. She will be with us from January 23, 2012, until March 16, 2012.

26. WEST VIRGINIA WRITES- We are doing this to give the second graders experience in writing and typing stories on the computer. This is a requirement this year for second grade. This is only practice for next year. Next year the writing assessment is part of the WEST-TEST and the students need to do the best they can on this writing assignment. The state department wanted the second grade to be exposed to this and have them practice so they will be ready for next year. Thank you for all your help. We will be doing some more in the near future.
