Simpson Elementary School
PTA General Meeting Minutes
October 2009

The meeting was called to order by Meredith McCarthy at 6:30 pm.

An American Flag that was carried by Tom Maiden in Iraq was donated to the school. The flag along with the certificate will be placed in the gym/café.

The Pledge of Allegiance was lead by Laura Kimble.

Introductions were made.

Principal’s Report: Mrs. Reid has asked if the PTA would consider paying for the Latin America Show on March 15th. If the PTA does not pay for the event then the money will come from the School’s Budget. The cost is $400.00.
Meredith McCarthy suggested that we discuss this with the Executive Committee in particular the Treasurer.
Mrs. Reid requested that the Halloween Costumes not to depict any violence or blood. No full mask. No face paint.

Treasurer’s Report: Denise Harbert was unable to attend the meeting therefore Jennifer Walker spoke on her behalf. Please see attached report.

Membership Report: Pam Miller was not available. The last count of members was approximately 120.

Budget Committee: Jennifer Walker had nothing to report.

Yearbook Committee: The yearbooks that are still left will be available at the book sale.

Homeroom Mothers Committee: The first and fifth grades will have combined parties due to unequal distribution of volunteers.

Fall Festival: A problem arose however, money was available to purchase more face paints and prizes. Toilets are needed for the toilet paper toss. By the end of the meeting someone had donated toilets for the toilet toss. Of note, the items for the cake walk must be store bought.

Wellness Committee: Carla Bailey reports that she has 50 people on the wellness committee. The tee shirts will be distributed tomorrow. The committee has $600.00 left from last year and $2500.00 from corporate donations. $2000.00 was spent for the free tee shirts for the teachers and students. The Wellness Day will take place on Friday and a mini health fair will occur in the spring some time after West Test. Carla has 20 volunteers for Friday.    All parents are invited to attend an Internet Safety Program 1:00 in the Computer Lab.

Reflections Committee: The theme for this year is Beauty is… Entries will be judged on January 15. The rules are available online. The entries have to be flat. IMPORTANT if you have an error or miss a question on the entry form you will be disqualified. The entry forms must be complete.

Old Business: The Bylaws have been reviewed and for convenience the board would like for the timing of the terms of the officers and the fiscal year to begin and end at the same time. This would allow each treasurer to close out the books and end her term.
We will need 2/3 of the membership to amend the bylaws. There will be a vote in November. Currently we are investigating to see if we can do this vote by paper ballot.

Library: Mrs. Hill our librarian has a request. Please see attached letter. The letter was read by Laura Kimble. A motion was made by Carla Bailey that we purchase the books needed for the school wide reading program. The motion was second. A vote was held and all were in favor. The group agreed that the budget should be amended for this purpose because it was a school wide program that would involve every student. Mrs. Hill is looking for volunteers to log the books for the students. The group is requesting that Mrs. Hill provide us with a list of books for the library so that we may request that parents donate a book to the library in honor of their child.

The next General PTA Meeting is November 18th at 3:30.

A motion to adjourn was made by Meredith McCarthy. The motion was second.
