Health Occupations Science Technology • Medical Assisting • Practical Nursing

Health Occupations Science Technology
This one-year program is designed to prepare individuals for a medical career in an area such as nursing, physical therapy, dietary, and veterinary science. During the year, students learn body structure and function, medical terminology and infection control procedures. Externship hours may be completed at long-term care facilities, hospitals, outpatient therapy settings and veterinary clinics.

Medical Assisting

This one-year program prepares students for entry-level employment in physician and dental offices, clinics, and related areas such as pharmacies, physical therapy clinics, optometry practices, and hospitals. The curriculum covers both administrative (front office) and clinical (back office) skills and places a strong emphasis on terminology, anatomy, and physiology. During clinical externships students gain valuable hands-on-experience that complements their classroom learning. This program covers the core content as specified in the state-adopted Health Cluster and forms the basis for the health pathways and majors. Students who plan to further their education in health professions gain an advantage from this scientific knowledge base and practical application of skills. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be eligible to take the national certification test to become a Registered Medical Assistant. High school seniors are given first priority. It is highly recommended that juniors enroll in the Health Occupations Science Technology Class.

Practical Nursing
(post-secondary only) The Practical Nursing program is comprehensive and designed to prepare the students to render safe and effective bedside nursing care to patients of all ages and backgrounds. In addition, students perform basic and advanced medical-surgical skills and administer medications using various routes to a variety of patients. Clinical rotations augment academic theory and prepare the student in various settings. Successful completion of the program qualifies the student to take the West Virginia State Board Examination for Licensed Practical Nurses. For detailed information, please call 304-326-7583.
