What are the students learning?
Reading
The students are becoming good readers. They are learning to read one-syllable words. They are using decodable skills for unknown words. We are learning to spell many sight words. The children have been using these words in journal writing and spelling activities.
Math
Recognizing, counting, and adding/subtracting numbers are skills that we have been focusing on all year. We have used lots of manipulatives to reinforce these skills. We have incorporated technology to help enhance their understanding of the curriculum. Telling time, recognizing/counting money, and calendar activities are ongoing skills throughout the year.
Science
The students have used lots of hands-on activities to understand the world around them. They have conducted many experiements, such as planting flowers, making raisins dance, making a volcano erupt, melting snow, and much more. Charts, graphs, and other organizers were implemented to help in the understanding of the topics.
Writing
Recognizing and writing the alphabet is a necessary writing skill. The children practice this writing daily with names, words, and sentences leading to storytelling and journal writing.
